Srijan, which means creation in Sanskrit, presents performances in the creative dance style of Uday Shankar. Srijan's performances feature innovative dance pieces, which are distinctly Indian in style, yet universal in appeal. Srijan's  repertoire represents both dances similar in style to Shankar's original compositions as well as extensive new choreographies which use music from both classical and contemporary traditions. Several of Srijan's pieces have been experimental and have utilized dance as a medium for expression of poetry - frequently English translations of great Indian works. The emphasis in Srijan's presentations has been to convey extreme  diversity of moods and themes that can be created using this particular dance style. Realizing the multicultural and multilingual facet of audiences in the U.S.A, Srijan has utilized the Uday Shankar dance style as a springboard to break new grounds.
